Chapter 16

The party was nearly over when I returned to the living room. My men were huddled out on the balcony, looking to be involved in a serious conversation. Before joining them, I looked around.

The women that had arrived, the pixie cut included, had left. Stilt’s girlfriend was curled up on the couch with one of my grey blankets tucked in around her.

Luke was the first one to look at me before the others followed suit. I gave him the look as to insinuate to where Lina went.

Luke lifted his nose and pointed toward the restroom located in the back of the apartment. The one she had used last time she was here.

The night air was crisp and beginning to cool. The cooling signaled the ending of summer but the beginning of my favorite season. Fall.

The stars seemed to burn brighter during these nights. The coolness forced the smog to part, allowing a full spectrum of them to show.

“Okay D, it’s time. You have been Awal for the past two weeks. What is going on with you?” Taleo asked before handing me a full glass of whiskey.

I leaned over the railing, looking towards the world below. The lights, cars, sounds. “I know.” I hissed. “I have no acceptable reason for cutting you guys off, but I will explain what I can. The night we rode out after I took Evangeline home.” I analyzed Luke's face.

“Lina?” Luke asked.

I ignored and continued, “I found those men that hurt her. I was able to take care of two of them, but the other got away.” I filled my mouth with whiskey to calm the beast that started to stir inside me. “I had a hard time accepting that he wouldn’t come back to finish her off, so I have been putting all my focus on keeping her safe.” I eyed Luke, who looked confused.

“What are you talking about?” Luke asked, looking at the men who remained silent.

They all knew. They hadn’t seen her since that night, but they knew. Ollie was the only one to speak up.

“Son, she was attacked. Badly beaten. Barely recognizable. Drastan saved her and took care of her while she healed.”

“What, no. How was I not involved?” Luke asked.

“It was the night we were sent to the pawnshop. You were sent home to cool off.” Taleo said calmly.

“Damnit Luke. You were not supposed to bring her here.” I snapped.

“How the hell was I supposed to know that?” Luke said, taking a step back from my glare.

“You weren’t. We didn’t bother telling you because we didn’t think this would be an issue. You weren’t a part of it.” Stilts chimed in.

“Wait, you said you have been watching her? Are you stalking her?” Luke said nastily towards me.

“Fuck you! I’m protecting her. What are you doing with her?” The anger was growing inside me, forcing the prick to emerge inside my mouth.

My fangs elongated to the edge of my lips. It was taking all I could to hide them from the others.
